Son of the private scholar Lothar v. Dettelbach and the concert singer Marianne v. Dettelbach (née Lindner); from 1919 studied art history and philosophy in Graz and Munich, dissertation on 'Die Deutschordenskirche (Leechkirche) zu Graz' (1924); cultural journalist at the 'Neues Grazer Tagblatt' (opera and concert criticism, feature service), editorial colleague and friend of Franz Nabl, member of the German nationalist 'Südmarkrunde' around Viktor von Geramb; 1930-1938 freelance writer, friendship with right-wing conservative-folk authors such as Rudolf Hans Bartsch, Max Mell or Hans Kloepfer, member of the 'Kampfbund für deutsche Kultur', 1938 joined the cultural department of the Graz 'Tagespost', 1943 'Kunstpreis der Stadt der Volkserhebung'; 1948-1976 freelance writer and contributor to various newspapers in Graz, from 1953 permanent employee at the ORF regional studio in Styria in the areas of 'serious music', 'literature' and 'science' (over 1000 lectures, readings, dialogs)

Acquisition history of the collection marked 'Nachlass Dr. Hans von Dettelbach' is not documented; according to the receipt stamp of 11.10.1977, it came to the Institute of German Studies at the University of Graz and was kept in the same iron chest as the Anastasius Grün estate, which was taken over by the Nabl Institute in 2021. Other parts of Dettelbach's written legacy are likely to have gone to the Institute of Musicology.
