Hammerl Elfriede

Born on 29.4.1945 in Prebensdorf (Styria). Journalist and writer; studied German and theater studies at the University of Vienna, then worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper "Neues Österreich"; 1982 to 1984 in Washington D.C.; freelance since 1977, wrote columns, essays and stories for various print media, including "Kurier", "profil", "Stern", "Vogue", Cosmopolitan", "marie claire" as well as screenplays (including for ORF), plays and cabaret texts. Co-initiator of the Austrian women's referendum (1997), candidate of the Liberal Forum for the national elections (1999), member of the non-university advisory board of the University of Innsbruck (2000 to 2002).

Awards include: Journalism Prize of the City of Vienna (1999), Women's Prize of the City of Vienna (2002), Concordia Prize (2003), Golden Medal of Merit of the State of Vienna (2006), Kurt Vorhofer Prize (2011); awarded the professional title of Professor (2011), Frauenring Prize (2015), Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria (2016), Austrian Journalist of the Year (2016), Concordia Prize (2018).

Publications include: Vater-, Mutter- und Geburtstag (1980), Probierʼ es aus, Baby (1988), Love me tender (1989), Schuldgefühle sind schön. Observations by Ferdinand the cat (1992), Von Frauen, Männern und anderen Überraschungen (1993), Von Eltern, Kindern und anderen Kuriositäten (1994), Hast du unseren Mann betrogen (1997), Hunde (1997), Mausi oder Das Leben ist ungerecht (2002), Der verpasste Mann (2004), Alles falsch gemacht (2010), Kleingeldaffäre (2011), Von Liebe und Einsamkeit (2016), Alte Geschichten (2018), Das muss gesagt werden (2020).
