Heribert Schwarzbauer Collection
Born on 13.1.1922, died on 7.7.2009, both in Graz. Journalist, writer, lexicographer. After elementary school, Schwarzbauer attended the Lichtenfels grammar school and then studied philosophy and art history in Graz. After being drafted into the mountain troops on the "Eastern Front", he was taken prisoner of war in Russia. On his return, he completed his doctorate at the University of Graz in 1947 with a dissertation on "Fundamentals of Metaphysics in Giordano Bruno and Leibniz". After completing an apprenticeship in bookselling and publishing at the publishing house "Styria", he worked as an editor for the "Kleine Zeitung" from 1948 and since then has written countless articles for the culture section of this newspaper. In addition to his journalistic activities, he worked as an insurance clerk.
Schwarzbauer wrote a novel about his experiences as a prisoner of war ("Menschen ohne Angesicht", 1950), worked for other newspapers and magazines besides the "Kleine Zeitung" ("Steirische Berichte", "Presse" and others), emerged as an editor and completed the encyclopaedia "Kunst und Künstler in der Steiermark" (1967-1982) edited by Rudolf List.
Schwarzbauer earned particular merit as a collector: as early as the 1950s, he built up an extensive collection of newspaper cuttings on artists (painters, musicians, writers). In 1990, he made the entire collection of writers available to the newly founded Franz Nabl Institute, which then further expanded the collection in the "Styrian Authors" section.
Schwarzbauer's collecting activities also extended to autographs, correspondence and texts by writers. This "Heribert Schwarzbauer Collection" comprises holdings on 143 persons. A detailed index is available.
