Franz Nabl
Born on 16.7.1883 in Lautschin (Bohemia), died on 19.1.1974 in Graz. The son of a landowner and forestry councillor, he studied law, philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Vienna from 1901 and emerged as a writer from 1905. In 1919, he moved to Baden near Vienna and lived in Graz from 1924 to 1927 as features editor of the "Neues Grazer Tagblatt", where he finally settled in 1934. During National Socialism, his anti-civilizational work, including Das Grab der Lebendigen. Studie aus dem kleinbürgerlichen Leben (1917) and Der Fund (1937), which discriminated against social democracy, were particularly well received. Nabl, who left the P.E.N. Club in 1933, did not resist the Nazi takeover but did not join the party. His work was rediscovered in the 1960s by authors of the Graz Group, such as Peter Handke, Gerhard Roth and Wolfgang Bauer. His works - inspired by the narrative tradition of the late 19th century - include the novels Der Ödhöf (1911), Galgenfrist (1921), Der Mann von gestern (1935), the autobiographical writings Steirische Lebenswanderung (1938), Der erloschene Stern (1962) and Meine Wohnstätten (1975) as well as the essay collection Das Rasenstück (1953). Nabl was awarded the Mozart Prize (1934), an honorary doctorate from the University of Graz (1943), the Literature Prize of the City of Vienna (1952), the Grand State Prize for Literature of the Republic of Austria (1957) and the Cultural Prize of the City of Graz (1966[?]).
