Gerhard Roth
Gerhard Roth, born on 24.6.1942 in Graz, 1961-1967 studied medicine at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz. 1963 Marriage to Erika Wolfgruber, with whom he has three children, Eva (* 1960), Petra (* 1964) and Thomas (* 1965). 1967 Abandons his studies and moves to the Graz Computer Centre, where he becomes Head of the Organization Department in 1970. 1971-1989 Member of the Forum Stadtpark. 1972 Suhrkamp publishes the autobiography of albert einstein as his first literary book. Three trips to America with Wolfgang Bauer (1972, 1973 also accompanied by Alfred Kolleritsch and 1975), a fourth in 1978 for a film portrait. 1973-1978 Member of the Graz Authors' Assembly. 1977 Resigns from the Rechenzentrum Graz, has lived as a freelance writer ever since. Also in 1977, moved from Suhrkamp to S. Fischer and moved to southern Styria with Senta Thonhauser, whom he married in 1995. 1979 one-year stay in Hamburg as part of the funding program "Foreign Artists as Guests in Hamburg". 1986 Moves to Vienna while retaining his domicile in Obergreith. 1987 Moves from Obergreith to nearby Kopreinigg as a residence for the summer months. 1989 Renting the apartment Am Heumarkt in Vienna. In the late 1980s, work on the project Über Bilder. Austrian painting after 1945 from the Zentralsparkasse collection. Acquaintance with numerous contemporary Austrian painters. 1978-1991 Work on the seven-volume cycle Die Archive des Schweigens [Vol. 1: Im tiefen Österreich (1990), Vol. 2: Der Stille Ozean (1980), Vol. 3: Landläufiger Tod (1984), Vol. 4: Am Abgrund (1986), Vol. 5: Der Untersuchungsrichter (1988), Vol. 6: Die Geschichte der Dunkelheit (1991), Vol. 7: Eine Reise in das Innere von Wien (1991)], which is set in southern Styria and Vienna. From 1995, the equally extensive Orkus cycle followed, incorporating various foreign cultures into the theme and comprising the books Der See (1995, set in Neusiedlersee), Der Plan (1998, Japan), Der Berg (2000, Greece and Mount Athos), Der Strom (2002, Egypt), Das Labyrinth (2005, Madeira, Madrid and Lisbon), Das Alphabet der Zeit (2007, Graz), Die Stadt (2009, Vienna) and Orkus - Reise zu den Toten (2011 Graz, Vienna and others).among others). 2011 Completion of the 15-volume double cycle on the "delusion of the world" from Die Archive des Schweigens and Orkus, which are connected in the form of a "double helix". In 2014, Grundriss eines Rätsels was published as a kind of coda. Since then, Gerhard Roth has been working on his three-part Venice cycle, which he will complete in 2021: Die Irrfahrt des Michael Aldrian (2017), Die Hölle ist leer, die Teufel sind alle hier (2019) and Es gibt keinen böseren Engel als die Liebe (2021). The author has made countless trips to the locations of his novels, and his photographic work, which accompanies his writing, has been published in six photo volumes in recent years - Atlas der Stille (2007), Im unsichtbaren Wien (2010), Über Land und Meer (2011), Im Irrgarten der Bilder. The Gugging Artists (2012), Traces (2017), Venice. A reflection of humanity (2020) - and several photo and material exhibitions. Gerhard Roth has received numerous important awards for his extensive oeuvre, including the "Grand Austrian State Prize" in 2016. He died on February 8, 2022 at the age of 79. His last novel "Die Imker" was published in May 2022.

Acquisition: Purchase by the Province of Styria on 19.9.2001, donation to the Nabl Institute on 21.9.2001. All works and materials added during the author's lifetime were also acquired, so that the estate has grown continuously in all areas.
