Helmut Schranz

Born on 12.1.1963 in Feldbach, died on 6.9.2015 in Graz. Schranz studied German language and literature in Graz and worked at the Franz Nabl Institute at the University of Graz. In addition to book publications such as "Gute Nacht Geschichte" (1988), "BIRNALL. Es ist unter der Haut" (2009) and "BIRNALL Suada. LyrikVulgoProsaTendenzMontage" (2015), he published the majority of his texts committed to the experimental and avant-garde movements of the 20th century in the literary magazine "perspektive", whose Graz editorial office he headed from the early 1990s. Schranz was awarded the literary promotion prizes of the City of Graz and the Province of Styria, the Austrian State Scholarship for Literature 2013/14, the Project Scholarship for Literature 2014/15 and the lime_lab prize of "steirischer herbst" for his radio play "Kleiner Pelz StrichCode Suada" in 2014.

Founded in 1977 in Bad Ischl as a student newspaper and heterogeneous periodical and based in Graz since the early 1980s, "perspektive" developed into one of the most prominent literary magazines in the country under Schranz's co-editorship and represented a decidedly avant-garde concept of literature under the self-definition as a "base camp avant-garde". The commitment to the avant-garde and against a commercialized, merely publicity-driven literary industry culminated in 1999 in a podium storm armed with spray guns by "perspektive" members around Ralf B. Korte, Robert Steinle, Sylvia Egger and Schranz at the symposium "Avantgarde - Auslöschen oder Verbessern" at Schloss Solitude near Stuttgart.
