Danhofer Wilhelm
Born on 1.9.1914 in Villach (Carinthia), died on 23.9.1991 in Graz. Germanist and folklorist; early years in Kindberg (Styria), Vienna and Linz; moved to Graz in 1925, graduated from high school, then studied German philology, history, folklore, English and Romance philology at the University of Graz; appointed student leader in March 1938, involved in the NSD student association; doctorate in 1939 with Der deutsche Weg im politischen Drama (The German Way in Political Drama), 1943 teaching examination for German and history; drafted into the German Wehrmacht in 1940; Returned home as a war invalid, banned from his profession; passed the teaching examination for secondary schools; 1955 to 1979 professor at the Akademische Gymnasium Graz; 1958 to 1963 worked at the Arbeitermittelschule; 1970 to 1979 lecturer at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Graz; 1974 to 1979 jury member of the Styrian Literature Prize Commission; member of the Styrian Historical Association, 1970 to 1984 in charge of the subject "Styrian regional studies" at secondary schools.
Awards include: Decoration of Honor of the Provincial Capital of Graz (1985), Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria and Golden Decoration of Honor of the Province of Styria (1979), Grand Decoration of Honor and Grand Golden Decoration of Honor of the Province of Styria (1986).
Numerous essays and lectures on Styrian literary and cultural history, edition of a three-volume edition of Hans Kloepfer's works (1967).
